After writing about solitude, it felt natural to turn toward the inner landscape we meet when the world grows quiet. Solitude has a way of revealing what’s been whispering inside us all along — the subtle ways we receive guidance, comfort, ideas, and clarity. These intuitive pathways, often called the four clairs, are simply the languages our inner wisdom uses to reach us.
A Gentle Exploration of the Four Clairs
(Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Clairsentience, Claircognizance)
Before we talk about the four clairs, I want to invite you into a small experiment. Think of this as a quiet doorway into your own inner senses — the ones that have been with you your whole life, whether you’ve named them or not.
Exercise 1: Tuning In
Grab a pen and paper. Take a few breaths, close your eyes, and once you are in a relaxed state, take a moment to think about something you need to do tomorrow. It can be anything at all.

Notice what happens inside you.
- Do you see anything — images, colours, flashes, people or places
- Do you hear anything — words, phrases, an inner narrator
- Do you feel something — warmth, tensions, excitement, emotion, a shift in your body
- Do you just know something — an idea or clarity that arrives fully formed
Write down whatever you noticed. No analysis needed.
Exercise 2: Remembering a Movie
Think of a movie you’ve watched recently.
How does your mind bring it back?
- Do scenes appear like little mental clips
- Do you hear dialogue or music
- Do you feel the atmosphere of the movie
- Do you have an instant thought like, “I loved that one”
Capture what showed up.
Exercise 3: Someone You Love
Bring to mind someone you love — a partner, child, friend, parent, or pet.
Tune in gently.
- Do you see their face or expressions
- Do you hear their voice or laugh
- Do you feel warmth, tenderness, or emotion in your body
- Do you get a sudden knowing about them
Write down what you noticed.
Reflecting on What You Discovered
Now look at your notes. Which of the 4 were prominent for you in each example?
What do you think about your results — familiar, surprising, or somewhere in between?
Most people discover that one or two intuitive channels have been quietly leading the way for years. Others notice a blend. Some realize they’ve been using all four without ever naming them.
There’s no right way to experience intuition. There’s only your way.
Some people love to develop these abilities. Others are simply curious. Both paths are valid. Intuition isn’t a requirement for a meaningful life; it’s simply one of the many tools available to us as humans.
I’ve taken psychic development classes in the past and lived through seasons of being very open and very sensitive. Those experiences taught me a lot — including the importance of grounding and boundaries. As a psychotherapist, I choose to keep my feet firmly on the earth. I pray, I open to receiving, and I also know how to turn off the tap when I need rest from ideas, insights, and writing.
Intuition is a gift.
But so is discernment.
So is choosing when to listen — and when to simply be human.
The Four Clairs and Their Chakra Connections
Each clair has a natural home in the body — a place where its energy tends to enter, express, or be felt. These aren’t rigid rules; they’re gentle maps that help us understand how intuition moves through us.

Claircognizance — Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
The Clair of Knowing
Claircognizance is the intuitive sense of knowing. Ideas and insights seem to drop in from above — clear, complete, and often unexpected.
This is the energy of the Crown Chakra, where inspiration enters like a beam of light.
It can feel like:
- A sudden understanding
- A perfect metaphor arriving out of nowhere
- A solution appearing before you’ve finished asking the question
- A download of clarity while showering, driving, or walking
For many people, this is the most natural clair because it feels like thinking — but with a different texture. Cleaner. Quieter. More precise.
Clairvoyance — Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
The Clair of Seeing
Clairvoyance is the intuitive sense of inner vision.
It lives in the Third Eye, the center of imagination and insight.
It can show up as:
- A movie playing in your mind
- A quick flash of an image
- A symbol, colour, or object
- A visual impression that feels like imagination but carries meaning
Some people see vividly; others see softly. Both are valid.
Clairsentience — Heart Chakra (Anahata)
The Clair of Feeling
Clairsentience is the intuitive sense of emotion and sensation.
It’s rooted in the Heart Chakra, where emotional and energetic information is received.
It can feel like:
- Sensing the mood of a room instantly
- Feeling someone’s sadness or joy before they speak
- Warmth, tightness, or movement in the chest
- A wave of emotion that doesn’t seem to belong to you
This is the clair of empaths, therapists, healers, and anyone who “just feels things.” It’s powerful — and it requires boundaries.
Clairaudience — Throat & Ear Chakras
The Clair of Hearing
Clairaudience is the intuitive sense of inner hearing.
It’s connected to the ears and the Throat Chakra, where communication lives.
It can show up as:
- Hearing your name called when no one is there
- A loud “hello” or a single word
- A song that plays in your mind with perfect timing
- A phrase that repeats until you pay attention
Most clairaudience is subtle — more like inner hearing than external sound.
If You Want to Explore The Four Clairs Further
Some people feel called to deepen their intuitive abilities, and others are content simply understanding how they naturally receive information. Both paths are completely valid.
If you’re someone who does want to explore further, here are gentle places to begin:
- Local meditation or spiritual centers
- Online platforms like Sounds True or Gaia
- Books by grounded teachers such as Sonia Choquette or Caroline Myss
Books and online courses allow you to explore at your own pace, with healthy boundaries and discernment.
A Note on Discernment
Over the decades, I’ve met spiritual teachers of all kinds — some beautifully boundaried and honourable, and others who were kind people but quite open, boundaryless, or inappropriate. Those experiences taught me something important: if you choose to explore intuitive development with a teacher, seek out the ones who are grounded, ethical, and clear in their boundaries. This work is delicate. The container matters. Honourable teachers help you grow without overstepping, projecting, or making your intuition about them.

Closing Thoughts
Whatever we ask for is given — not always in the way we expect. You might choose to play with that, to talk and listen to your guidance, your higher self, or whatever name feels true for you. I understand we are always connected to Source, and that separation is impossible. But as humans, we often feel separate or alone.
Getting to know your own ways of receiving — whether through images, feelings, sounds, or sudden knowing — can become a quiet reminder that you are never actually alone or cut off. You are always loved, supported, and guided, to the exact degree that you wish that to be so. And sometimes, simply recognizing your intuitive language is enough to soften the edges of that old illusion of separateness.
